Mustangs run past Potsdam 5-3 (Potsdam Story)

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - Morrisville State (8-15-1, 4-11 NEWHL) scored four second period goals and held off the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (11-13, 6-11) 5-3 on Friday evening. Seniors Emily DellaNeve (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons), Alex Quinn (Potsdam, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) and Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) each scored for the Bears.

Potsdam outshot the Mustangs 12-6 in the first period. The Bears also earned the only power play of the opening 20 minutes. However, the contest was scoreless heading into the first intermission.

Allie Davidson opened the scoring for Morrisville at 10:32 with a power-play goal. At 16:13, Hailee Easson netted another power-play goal to make it a 2-0 contest. Just 57 seconds later, DellaNeve got Potsdam on the board. Sophomore forward Lyvia Chambers (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and junior defenseman Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) picked up the assists. The Mustangs scored twice in 49 seconds at the end of the period. Rhys Brown scored at 18:48 and Alana McDonald made it 4-1 with just 23 seconds left in the period. Each team had two power-play opportunities in the middle stanza.

The score was unchanged until 16:21 of the third period. Quinn scored a power-play marker with an assist from freshman forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles). At 18:26, Potsdam pulled freshman Madelyn Adamic (Mentor, Ohio/Washington Pride) for an extra attacker. Four seconds later, Merrill scored her 26th goal of the season and 54th of her career to close the gap to 4-3, while on the man advantage. Senior forward Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego) notched the assist. The Bears continued to press, but couldn't find the equalizer. With just over 22 seconds remaining, Davison struck again with an empty-netter to seal the outcome.

Junior goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Arvada, Colo./Team Colorado) started for the Bears, stopping 14 shots and allowing four goals in the first 39:50. Adamic saved each of the six chances that came her way in the last 18:48. Maggie Jones started in goal for Morrisville and stopped 29 of the 30 shots in 52:53. Elizabeth Timby allowed two goals on seven shots in 7:07.

Potsdam was 2-for-5 on the power play and Morrisville went 2-for-3.

The Bears wrap up the season at SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 3 p.m.
