Canton, NY – Mathilde Couture scored her sixth goal of the season but visiting SUNY Cortland, a team receiving votes in the USCHO Top 15 Poll, earned a 3-1 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win v. the Roos on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Cortland opened the scoring at 12:06 of the first period when the Red Dragons won an offensive zone draw at the left circle. Jillian Hlasnick played the puck back to Gillian Zwolak at the point. Her shot was turned aside by Sirena Alvarez but Mia Hlasnick put home the rebound for the early lead.
  • The visitors extended the lead to two at 18:17 of the period. Dany Donegan played a pass from the low slot back to Ainsley Delacourt at the point who beat Alvarez high glove side for the 2-0 lead.
  • Cortland held an 11-4 shots advantage in the opening period taking a 2-0 lead into first intermission.
  • The Roos got on the board cutting the deficit in half with the skater advantage at 4:36 of the middle period. Hannah Clement won an offensive zone faceoff at the right circle to Danika Lalonde who played it back to Couture at the right point. She exchanged passes with Iida Laitinen at the left point as Couture beat Molly Goergen high glove side.
  • Canton held a 13-10 shots advantage in the second period as Cortland led 2-1 at second intermission.
  • Cortland regained the two-goal edge midway through the third period on the power play. Dany Donegan played the puck from the left circle to Delacourt at the point. She swung the puck to Grace Schnorr on her right who rifled a shot through traffic past a screened Alvarez.
  • Canton had a late power play chance and pulled the goalie with 14 seconds remaining but was unable to find the equalizer.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cortland held an advantage in shots (34-22), while the Roos had the upper hand in face offs (25-20).
  • The Red Dragons were 1-for-1 on the power play, while Canton was 1-for-3.
  • Delacourt led the visitors with a goal and assist, while Donegan dished out a pair of apples.
  • Alvarez made 31 saves in defeat, while Georgen turned aside 21 shots in the win.
