Cortland Blanks Potsdam, clinches home playoff game (Cortland Story)

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team defeated Potsdam, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 17-6 overall and 12-4 in the conference and clinched the second seed in the upcoming league playoffs. The Bears dropped to 11-12 and 6-10.

Sophomore Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) recorded two goals and two assists to lead Cortland. With her two assists, she set the single-season program record with 19, breaking the mark of 18 set by Judy Ellis in the 2003-04 season. Freshman Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) tallied a goal and an assist, and senior Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound) each netted a goal. Junior Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) registered four assists, and graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) and sophomore Beth McArthur (Peterborough, ON/Lawrence University) collected an assist.

Sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) registered 18 saves for the Red Dragons in posting her ninth shutout of the season. Freshman Madelyn Adamic (Mentor, OH/Washington Pride) turned aside 29 shots for Potsdam.

Mia Hlasnick started the scoring just 1:07 into the game, scoring on a quick wrist shot deep on the right side. Cortland took control of the game with a three-goal second period. Donegan scored 11:26 into the period when she carried the puck out of the right corner, skated across the crease and scored inside the left post. Persinger made it a 3-0 game at 15:38, deflecting a shot in front on the power play. Aneborn netted her 10th goal of the season with 1:10 remaining in the period on a wrist shot from the slot set up by Mia Hlasnick for record-setting assist.

Mia Hlasnick completed the scoring 1:06 into the third period with a rebound goal in front. Just over two minutes later, Cortland killed off 42 seconds of a two-play advantage for the Bears to keep Potsdam scoreless and sealed the 5-0 win with another penalty kill later in the period..
