Red Dragons blank Bears, clinch home playoff game (Potsdam Story)

CORTLAND, N.Y. - SUNY Cortland (17-6, 12-4 NEWHL) used a big second period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (11-12, 6-10 NEWHL) 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Dragons jumped on the Bears immediately. Mia Hlasnick scored just 1:07 into the contest. Cortland kept the pressure on, but Bears freshman goalie Madelyn Adamic (Mentor, Ohio/Washington Pride) stopped the other 11 shots that came her way. The Red Dragons led 1-0 after one.

Cortland added three goals in the second period. Dany Donegan made it a 2-0 contest at 11:26. The Red Dragons went on the power play minutes later. At 15:38, Hlasnick scored on the man advantage. Fanny Aneborn struck with 1:10 left in the period and Cortland took a 4-0 advantage into the second intermission. Adamic added 10 more stops in the period.

The Red Dragons added a fifth goal early in the third. Hlasnick closed the scoring and completed her hat trick at 1:06. Potsdam earned three power plays in the period and matched Cortland in shots, 9-9, but couldn't crack Red Dragons goalie Molly Goergen.

Adamic finished with 29 saves and Goergen made 18 stops for the shutout. Cortland was 1-for-1 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-3.

Potsdam heads to Morrisville on Friday night at 4 p.m. before wrapping up the regular season the next day back in Cortland at 3 p.m.
