Jillian Hlasnick's OT goal sends Cortland to NEWHL Championship

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored her ninth goal of the season nine minutes, one second into the second 20-minute overtime as the second-seeded Cortland women's ice hockey team earned a thrilling 2-1 victory versus third-seeded Oswego in the NEWHL Semifinals Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

The Red Dragons improved to 20-6 on the season and advanced to face top-seeded Plattsburgh on the road next Saturday in the conference championship game with an automatic NCAA Div. III playoff berth on the line. The Lakers ended their season at 14-11-1.

Sophomore Beth McArthur (Peterborough, ON/Lawrence University) also scored for Cortland. Graduate student Quinn Metcalfe (Rochester/Rochester Monarchs), senior Elena Eichmann (Fairport/Syracuse Nationals), sophomore Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and freshman Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) each collected an assist. With her assist, Mia Hlasnick tied the single-season scoring record at Cortland with 35 points on 13 goals and 22 assists, equaling the mark set by graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) who scored 35 points on 19 goals and 16 assists last season. Sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 24 saves.

Junior Rachel Corbett (Rochester/Buffalo Regals) scored her third goal of the season for Oswego. Seniors Taylor Hudon (Alexandria Bay/Nazareth College) and Avery Webster (Waterloo, ON/KW Jr. Rangers) picked up assists. Sophomore goalie Lexi Levy (St. Louis, MO/Post University) registered 61 saves.

McArthur gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead at 17:23 of the first period. Eichmann forced a turnover below the end line, Mertcalfe gathered the puck and sent a pass to McArthur in the high slot, who wristed a shot through traffic and past Levy for her second goal of the season.

After a scoreless second period in which Cortland outshot Oswego, 17-5, Corbett evened the game 2:30 into the third period when a pass from the right side from Hudon deflected off her skate and past Goergen. Both Goergen and Levy made key saves over the remainder of the period, sending the game to overtime.

In the first extra 20-minute period, Cortland held a 15-4 shot advantage. Schnorr had an excellent chance to secure the win just past the three-minute mark, but Levy denied her breakaway attempt. The Lakers then killed off a Cortland power play later in the period, and senior Morgan Shines (Marengo, IL/Chicago Mission) had her breakaway shot with 41 seconds remaining go over the net.

In the second overtime, each team successfully killed off power-play chances. The game-winning score came when Mia Hlasnick carried the puck down the left side and put a shot toward the goal. Jillian Hlasnick then tapped the loose puck over the goal line for the 2-1 victory.
