CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team closed its regular season with a 4-3 victory versus Potsdam Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 19-6 overall and 14-4 in the conference and set a single-season record for victories, besting the mark of 18 set last season. The Bears ended their season at 11-14 and 6-12.
For Cortland, sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 13 saves in earning her 26th career victory, surpassing the record of 25 she shared with Deanna Meunier who originally set the mark from 2012-16.
Sophomores Gillian Zwolak (Stoney Creek, ON/Ancaster Avalanche) and Natalie O'Brien (Buffalo/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and freshman Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound) each netted a goal for the Red Dragons. Junior Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and sophomore Mia Hlasnick (Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) recorded two assists. Graduate students Quinn Metcalfe (Rochester/Rochester Monarchs) and Johna Ezzard (Vienna, VA/Dallas Stars Elite) and senior Elena Eichmann (Fairport/Syracuse Nationals) each chipped in with an assist.
Senior Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, AK/Anchorage North Stars) led Potsdam with a goal and two assists. Sophomore Lyvia Chambers (Buffalo/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) recorded a goal and an assist, freshman Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles/Syracuse Valley Eagles) scored a goal and sophomore Sara Barrett (Tonawanda/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) contributed an assist. Freshman goalie Madelyn Adamic (Mentor, OH/Washington Pride) registered 48 saves.
After the game, Cortland honored Metcalfe, Ezzard, Jayden Kelley (East Berne/CP/Dynamo), Emily Kromer (Angola/Nazareth College), Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars), Monica Cahill (Oswego.Lysander Lightning) and Katelyn Kantor (Sherrill/Syracuse Nationals).
