Alvarez 12th Career Shutout Leads Roos Over Lakers

Canton, NY Senior Sirena Alvarez stopped all 33 shots she faced, helping lead the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to its first ever victory over Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) foe Oswego State.  It was Alvarez' 12th career shutout, tying a program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After two scoreless periods, the Roos finally solved Laker goaltender Lexi Levy when freshman Jane Pancoe skated in from the point and buried a rebound from the slot 3:54 into the period.  Pancoe's goal was assisted by junior Desiree Snook and freshman Kyra O'Keefe.
  • Freshman Sydney Valiquette scored the insurance goal the Roos needed with just under seven minutes remaining.
  • From that point on the defense clamped down and Alvarez made four additional saves to help preserve the win and shutout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Canton was 0/2 on the power play and 7/7 on the penalty kill.
  • Oswego had a slight edge at the faceoff dot 30-26.
  • Pancoe's goal was her fourth of the season, Valliquette's was her third.
  • Levy stopped 28 shots for the Lakers.
  • Alvarez's 12 shutout ties her with Brooke Susac '20 for the program record.
