Cortland blanks Canton 6-0, inches closer to playoff berth

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and skated to a 6-0 victory versus Canton Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the conference, while the Kangaroos dropped to 11-7-2 and 5-7-1.

Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) led Cortland with two goals and an assist. Graduate student Quinn Metcalfe (Rochester/Rochester Monarchs), junior Nicole Tulowiecki (Syracuse/Syracuse Nationals), sophomore Beth McArthur (Peterborough, ON/Lawrence University) and freshman Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) each netted a goal.

Senior Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and freshmen Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes) and Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound) collected two assists apiece. Graduate student Jayden Kelley (East Berne/CP Dynamo), junior Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and sophomore Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) recorded one assist each.

Sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) turned aside nine shots in posting her seventh shutout of the season for the Red Dragons. Senior goalie Sirena Alvarez (Jyvaskyla, Finland/Banff Hockey Academy) registered 39 saves for Canton.

Schnorr opened the scoring 7:27 into the game with a wrist shot on a loose puck on the power play. McArthur netted her first career goal as a Red Dragon 59 seconds later on a wrist shot from the right point that deflected in off a Canton player. Aneborn's eighth goal of the season came 59 seconds before the end of the period as she scored off a scramble in front.

Cortland pushed the lead to 4-0 just before the midway point of the second period on the power play. After Alvarez made two saves. Metcalfe backhanded in the loose puck on the right side of the crease for her third goal of the season.

Schnorr netted her ninth goal of the season at 3:01 of the third period also while Cortland had the skater advantage, lofting a wrist shot from the right point through traffic. Tulowiecki completed the scoring at the 3:56 mark, deflecting in a point shot by Persinger for her second goal of the season for the 6-0 final.
