Cortland explodes for 3 goals in 2nd period in blanking Wesleyan

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team scored three goals in just under a four-minute span in the second period and earned a 3-0 non-conference victory versus Wesleyan University Tuesday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons won for the eighth consecutive time and improved to 12-3 on the season. The Cardinals dropped to 9-4-1.

Senior Molly McCabe (Webster/18UAA Webster), junior Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and freshman Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound) each netted a goal for Cortland. Sophomore Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) recorded two assists, while graduate students Jayden Kelley (East Berne/CP Dynamo) and Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Casears), senior Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) collected one assist apiece.

Sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 24 saves for her fifth shutout of the season, tying the program single-season record. Junior Cam McCrystal (Duxbury, MA/Thayer Academy) stopped 23 shots in her first action of the season for Wesleyan.

The first period was scoreless as Goergen posted 10 saves, stopping an early short-handed breakaway attempt by sophomore Isabelle Allieri (Wellesley, MA/Middlesex).

Cortland's three-goal outburst started just past the midway point of the second period. McCabe scored her first goal of the season from the left point on a wrist shot through traffic at the 10:27 mark. Jillian Hlasnick then scored on the rebound at 13:33. Persinger completed the run on the power play at 14:21, scoring on the right side after McCrystal denied a shot by Schnorr.

The teams played evenly throughout the third period with Cortland holding an 8-7 advantage in shots as Goergen and the Red Dragons held on for the 3-0 shutout.
