Barrett Lifts Roos to Road Win at Buffalo State

Buffalo, NY – Junior Victoria McGarrity tied the game early in the third period and sophomore Kareena Barrett scored the game winner late, helping the SUNY Canton women's hockey team defeat Buffalo State 3-2 in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) game on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Junior Hannah Clement opened the scoring at 1:42 of first period, scoring her fifth of the year on a goal that was assisted by junior Kamryn Barnes and sophomore Sandrene Garofalo
  • Buffalo State's Angelina Cruzal tied the game at 4:03 of second period and Bethany Horvatits scored a power play goal at 17:42 of period to put the Bengals on top 2-1.
  • McGarrity buried a cross-crease feed from junior Iida Laitinen just two minutes into the third period to tie that game a 2-2.  Freshman Jayme McIlveen also earned an assist on the play.
  • As time wound down, the puck careened from a scrum in front of the net to freshman Asha Hanson whose shot from the point was saved by Bengal goaltender Jessica Auge.  The rebound bounced directly to Barrett who blasted a shot past Auge at 17:00 of the third period.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The win is the ninth straight for the Roos and comes on the heels of being ranked 15th nationally in the DIII Hockey News Poll.
  • Barnes, who is a mid-semester transfer from SUNY Oswego earned her first point as a Roo by assisting on the first goal.
  • Barrett's game winner was her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
  • The Roos dominated at the face off dot going 33-14 on the draws.  SUNY Canton finished 0/1 on the power play while Buffalo State was 1/3.
  • Freshman Claire Noftell finished with 10 saves for the win while her counterpart Auge made 24 saves for the Bengals.
