Merrill scores two more as Bears complete sweep of Monarchs

POTSDAM, N.Y.-Senior captain Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) continued her hot streak with two more goals in the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team's (4-3) 3-0 win over King's College (0-8) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) scored her first collegiate goal and freshman goalie Madelyn Adamic (Mentor, Ohio/Washington Pride) made 11 saves for a shutout in her first career start.

The teams started their second meeting at a slower pace. After the midway point of the first period, the Monarchs had one power-play opportunity and the Bears had back-to-back chances. Potsdam slowly built a 10-2 advantage in shots, but the contest was scoreless after 20 minutes.

Merrill opened the scoring at 4:07 of the second period with assists from junior defenseman Megan Sheehan (Akron, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and freshman defenseman Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles). Rebecca Cain made it a 2-0 game at the 18:43 mark with assists from Merrill and senior assistant captain Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel).

Merrill finished a feed from sophomore forward Karley Green (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam Ice Storm) at 3:20 of the third period, making it a three-goal contest. The Monarchs had two power plays in the third period, but were unable to solve Adamic and the Bears defense.

Sophomore goalie Syd Dahl (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) made 37 saves in the contest. Potsdam was 0-for-4 on the man advantage and King's was 0-for-6.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when they face William Smith College in neutral site contest at Skaneateles
