Quinn, Merrill each score twice as Bears overthrow Monarchs

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Senior defenseman Alex Quinn (Potsdam, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) and senior captain Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) each scored twice and added two assists as the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-3) roughed up King's College (0-7) 9-0 on Friday night. Freshman goalie Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos - Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 22 saves for her first career shutout.

The Bears controlled the contest from the outset and outshot the Monarchs 21-3 in the first period. Quinn opened the scoring at 13:04 with assists from senior assistant captain Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) and freshman forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles. With just under 10 seconds left in the period, Swamp scored a power-play marker with helpers from Quinn and Merrill.

Potsdam broke the game open in the middle stanza with four goals. Merrill netted her first at 3:38 with helpers from freshman defenseman Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles). Just 1:06 later, freshman forward Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) made it 4-0 with her first career goal on an assist from freshman forward Keely Towne (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam Ice Storm). Sophomore forward Karley Green (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam Ice Storm) netted a power-play goal at 11:38 with assists from graduate student forward Makenzie Martin (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam High School) and senior forward Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State). Towne netted her first collegiate goal at 14:36 to make it 6-0 Bears. Freshman forward Josie Purdy (White Lake, Nova Scotia/Ontario Hockey Academy) and Marandola assisted on the goal.

King's outshot the Bears 12-5 in the third period and came close, but couldn't get on the board. Potsdam scored three more times. Merrill had an unassisted goal at 3:54. Quinn did the same at 7:38. Senior forward Emily DellaNeve (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) closed the scoring at 8:06 to make it 9-0. Merrill and Swamp picked up the assists.

King's senior goalie Syd Dahl (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) finished with 32 saves in the contest. The Bears were 2-for-4 on the power play and the Monarchs went 0-for-5.

Merrill now has 47 career points on 37 goals and 10 assists, placing her 11th on the program's NCAA-era scoring list. She ranks third on the goals list, seven behind second place Annmarie Lewis '12 (44) and 24 behind Hall of Famer Jordan Ott '17 (61). Ott is King's head coach.
