Oswego edges Cortland 1-0, completes weekend sweep of Red Dragons

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Morgan Shines (Marengo, IL/Chicago Mission) scored her first goal of the season with 4:34 remaining in the game as the Oswego women's ice hockey team completed a home-and-home sweep over nationally 12th-ranked Cortland with a 1-0 victory in NEWHL action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) registered 19 saves for the Red Dragons (4-2, 2-2 NEWHL). Junior goalie Joanna Hiebert (Highland, MI/Meijer) stopped 31 shots for the Lakers (5-3, 5-1). junior Kensie Malone (Minneapolis, MN/Augsburg University) assisted on the winning goal.

The teams skated evenly in the first period with Oswego holding an 8-7 advantage in shots. The Red Dragons controlled more of the play in the second period, outshooting the Lakers, 15-5.

The third period resembled the first period as Cortland held a 9-7 shot edge. Shines scored the game shortly after a Cortland penalty expired. Shines won a faceoff back to Malone who fired a shot on goal. Shines skated into the slot and knocked a rebound past Goergen. The Red Dragons pulled Goergen for an extra skater with 1:25 remaining and created one final chance to tie the game, but Hiebert denied a shot from the right circle by senior Molly McCabe (Webster/18UAA Webster) with a tenth of a second on the clock to preserve the 1-0 win.
