Canton, NY – Desiree Snook recorded a goal and two assists and Sirena Alvarez posted a 22-save shutout to lead the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to a 5-0 win against Buffalo State in the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Roos got on the board first at 15:34 of the opening period. Kyra O'Keefe carried the puck the length of the ice roofing a shot top shelf into the left corner from below the right circle.
  • Canton owned a 23-5 shots advantage in the opening period taking a 2-0 lead into intermission.
  • The Roos doubled their lead off an offensive zone faceoff win by Gracyn Emmerton. Halle McKinnon got a piece of the puck before Snook fed the puck in deep to Emmerton. She circled behind the net slipping a wrist shot past Jess Auge. Canton held a 13-10 edge in shots in the second period taking a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.
  • Canton added two more goals 39 seconds apart midway through the third period. Karena Barrett had her shot blocked as the puck deflected to Alexia Labre who left it for Scarlet Ditoro who put a quick shot into the open right side of net.
  • Less than a minute later Victoria McGarrity poke checked the puck loose as the Bengals looked to clear their defensive zone. Snook picked the puck up as her initial shot was saved by Auge, but Snook buried the rebound for the 4-0 lead.
  • The Roos added a fifth goal with 15 seconds remaining when Hannah Clement put home a rebound at the far post off an Iida Laitinen shot from the right circle. Snook also picked up a helper on the play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Snook led the Roos with a goal and two assists, while 10 different players registered a point.
  • Alvarez made 22 saves in her first shutout of the season, which was the ninth shutout of her career.
  • The Roos outshot the Bengals 51-18 and held the upper hand in faceoffs, 34-22. Both teams went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
