5 Players Score as Canton Wins in Grant’s Debut

Hershey, PA – Jane Pancoe scored the game-winner with 3 minutes, 44 seconds left in the third period to lead the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to a 5-4 road win at Lebanon Valley College in the season-opener for both teams Friday evening.

The win is the first for first-year head coach and Potsdam native Kalie Grant in her regular season debut at the helm for the Roos.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The hosts got on the board first at 5:11 of the opening period when Mallory Burdick scored off a pass from Alexa Spiers.
  • The Roos converted just 11 seconds into their first power play chance of the season. Iida Laitinen's shot from the right side was saved by Shelby Guinard, but Desiree Snook stuffed home the rebound at the far post to tie things up at one at 6:16 of the first. Makyala Young also picked up an assist on the play.
  • The Dutchmen regained the one-goal edge converting their own goal with the skater advantage as Alexis Oukes put one past Sirena Alvarez at 8:27. Jess Dawe and Irina Brady assisted the tally.
  • In a back-and-forth battle the Roos tied things once again at 17:42. Victoria McGarrity picked up a loose puck and skated it from the right circle across the low slot where she placed a shot in the top left corner past a screened Guinard. Mathilde Couture and Sandrene Garofalo earned helpers on the score.
  • The Roos held a 13-7 shots on goal advantage in the opening period as the teams skated to first intermission tied at one.
  • Canton took its first lead of the game 11:46 into the middle period when Clement scored her first goal of the season putting home a rebound off a Couture shot.
  • The Roos made it 4-2 at 13:07 when Kyra O'Keefe and Ashten Morris skated 2-on-1 off a Couture outlet pass. Morris left it to O'Keefe on her right as she buried her first collegiate goal.
  • LVC got one back with 54 seconds left in the middle period as Spiers lit the lamp off the setup from Burdick and Katrina Strauts.
  • Canton dominated shots 19-6 in the second period taking a 4-3 lead to second intermission.
  • The Dutchmen tied things up with five minutes remaining off the stick of Brady on the power play.
  • Pancoe proved to come through with the heroics in her first collegiate game burying the game-winner with 3:44 remaining as McGarrity and Snook assisted the score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Roos controlled play owning a 43-18 advantage in shots on goal, while LVC held a slight 33-31 edge in faceoffs.
  • Canton went 1-for-4 with the skater advantage, while the Dutchmen were 2-for-4.
  • McGarrity and Snook led the Roos with a goal and assist each, while Couture dished out a game-high three assists. McGarritty registered a game-best +3 on-ice rating.
  • Alvarez made 14 saves in the win, while Guinard turned aside 38 shots in defeat.
