Donegan's OT goal lifts Cortland over Oswego 1-0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Junior Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) scored 10:56 into overtime and freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) turned aside 30 shots to lift the Cortland women's ice hockey team to a 1-0 victory at Oswego in the semifinals of the NEWHL tournament. The Red Dragons improved to 18-5-1 and advanced to face nationally second-ranked Plattsburgh in the title game on Saturday. The Lakers fell to 16-8-1 and had an eight-game winning streak snapped.

Junior Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) and sophomore Kait Bourgeois (Cobden, ON/Ottawa Thunder) assisted on Donegan's goal, her seventh of the season.

Goergen set a Cortland single-season record with her 11th win of the season and tied the single-season shutout record with her fifth of the campaign. Goalie Joanna Hiebert made 21 saves for the Lakers.

The Red Dragons controlled much of the play in the first period, outshooting Oswego, 10-3. The Lakers turned the momentum in the second and third periods, owning a 26-6 shot advantage, but Goergen stood tall in the net to send the game scoreless into overtime.

In the extra period, Cortland held a 3-1 edge in shots before an Oswego penalty at the 7:58 mark. The Red Dragons registered two shots on the player advantage, but Hiebert was up to the task to keep it a scoreless game. Shortly after the end of the Cortland power play, Donegan won a faceoff in Oswego's defensive zone and scored the game winner on a deflection in front to send the Red Dragons to the championship game.
