CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team scored three third-period goals to break open a tight game and skated to a 4-0 victory at Canton Friday afternoon in NEWHL action. The Red Dragons improved to 17-4-1 overall and 12-4-1 in the conference. The Kangaroos fell to 12-10-1 and 6-10-1.
Junior Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School) led Cortland with one goal and one assist apiece. Senior Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) and sophomore Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each netted a goal, and graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars), senior Emily Kromer (Angola/Nazareth College), junior Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) and freshmen Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and Gillian Zwolak (Stoney Creek, ON/Ancaster Avalanche) chipped in with an assist.
Freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) registered 20 saves for the Red Dragons in posting her fourth shutout of the season and raising her record to 10-3-1. Goalie Sirena Alvarez stopped 21 shots for Canton.
Gaffney gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 12:26 of the first period on the power play, depositing a shot into an open goal from the left side on a rebound in front. Donegan made it a 2-0 score at 2:57 of the second period with her sixth goal of the season from the slot. Cramer put the Red Dragons ahead, 3-0, at the 5:41 mark of the second period, sending a shot from the slot inside the left post after a Canton turnover for her seventh goal of the season. Jillian Hlasnick completed the scoring 4:51 before the end of the period, taking a back pass from Mia Hlasnick and beating Alvarez with a wrist shot from the edge of the right circle for her fifth goal of the season.
The scoreless third period featured just a combined eight shots on goals from the teams. Cortland went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Canton was 0-for-2 with the skater advantage in the final 20 minutes as the Red Dragons secured the shutout and the 4-0 win.
The same two teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Canton.

Cortland Blanks Women's Hockey to Open Weekend Set
Canton, NY – Visiting SUNY Cortland scored three times in the second period to earn a 4-0 win in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) contest on Friday.
The Red Dragons, who are receiving votes in the USCHO Top 10 poll, have won four straight league games and tied No. 2 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State back on February 4th.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cortland got on the board first at 12:26 of the opening period. Grace Schnorr's shot from the right point deflected to Amanda Gaffney below the right circle as she wristed a shot into the open net. Molly McCabe also picked up an assist on the play.
- Shots were even at nine in the opening period as the visitors led 1-0 after one.
- The Red Dragons doubled their lead at 2:57 of the middle period. McCabe played the puck to Danny Donegan skating through the neutral zone. She found Emily Kromer to her right as they executed a give-and-go with Donegan beating Sirena Alvarez glove side.
- Cortland's Kromer provided a nice forecheck forcing a turnover as Donegan collected the puck and found Meggan Cramer whose shot trickled past Alvarez at 5:41.
- The Red Dragons made it 4-0 at 15:09 off the stick of Jillian Hlasnick. Mia Hlasnick and Gillian Zwolak assisted the score. Cortland held a 13-6 shots advantage in the second period and took a 4-0 lead to second intermission.
- The Roos held a slim 5-3 shots edge in the third period but were unable to solve Cortland netminder Molly Goergen.
