HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period

  • The Lakers dominated the opening period, outshooting the Bears 18-4.
  • With just under four minutes remaining and on the power play, Morgan Shines swung the puck up to the blue line in the offensive zone.
  • Captain Philomena Teggart skated into the middle as Shines and Mack Hull set up a screen in front.
  • Teggart snapped a low shot just inside the post on the glove side for the 1-0 Laker lead.

Second Period

  • Oswego took an early penalty but managed to get a bunch of great shots in the woman-down situation.
  • Laker goalie Joanna Hiebert made a series of great saves on a second Potsdam power play about halfway through the period.
  • The Bears broke through when they won possession at their offensive blue line and created a two-on-one.
  • Kaylee Merrill threatened a pass to the middle, but ended up skating it down towards goal and snapping a shot in for the 1-1 tie.
  • Four minutes later, Merrill blocked a Laker pass and broke out of her defensive zone on a one-on-one with the Bears short-handed.
  • She skated into the zone and sent a shot that deflected awkwardly off the Laker defense and snuck past Hiebert for the 2-1 Potsdam lead.
  • The Lakers had a 15-11 edge in shots in the period and a 33-15 advantage overall through two frames.

Third Period

  • After a penalty kill by the Lakers, they cleared the puck down and out of their defensive zone.
  • The puck caromed off the wall and ended up bouncing over the stick of the Bears' defense where Shines gathered it and beat the Potsdam goalie to the high blocker side.
  • The goal was Shines' team-leading ninth and came with 15 minutes left in the contest.
  • With 6:11 to play, and Oswego on a power play, Ariella Haas took a pass from Simone Bednarik and beat the Potsdam goalie for the 3-2 lead.
  • Prior to the goal, senior Chyne Kennedy made a key play in preventing the Bears from clearing their defensive zone and earned an assist on the eventual game-winner.
  • Potsdam got in behind the Laker defense with about three minutes to play, but Avery Webster came up big with a hustle-play poke check from the backside to end the threat.
  • The Bears got a late power play opportunity, but the Oswego defense came up big and did not allow a single quality scoring chance during the final minutes of play.
