CORTLAND, N.Y. – Nine different players scored goals as the Cortland women's ice hockey team skated past Buffalo St., 9-0, Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. With the win, the Red Dragons set a school record for victories in a season since the program was re-established in 2000-01, improving to 16-4-1 overall and 11-4-1 in the conference. Cortland surpassed the previous mark of the 2018-19 team, which posted a 15-9-3 record.
Senior Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) and freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) paced the Red Dragons with one goal and two assists. Senior Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs), junior Elena Eichmann (Rochester/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Destiny Bautista (Quesnel, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) each tallied a goal and an assist. Graduate student Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Vipers), senior Johna Ezzard (Vienna, VA/Dallas Stars Elite), junior Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) and freshman Nat O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) netted one goal.
Sophomore Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) recorded three assists for the Red Dragons. Senior Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) picked up two assists, and graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) and junior Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) each contributed an assist.
Sophomore goalie Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) faced just three shots through the first two periods before giving way to senior Emily Steen (Windom, MN/Windom H.S.), who stopped all four shots on goal in the third period. Freshman goalie Jessica Auge (Laingsburg, MI/Honeybaked Detroit) stopped 35 shots through the first two periods for Buffalo St. Junior Valerie Helminen (Laurium, MI/Finlandia) made eight saves in the third period for the Bengals (1-19-1, 0-14 NEWHL).
Cortland led just 1-0 after the first period on DeVoe's goal. The Red Dragons took control of the game with a five-goal second period with Ezzard, Hlasnick, McCabe, Metcalfe and O'Brien each scoring. Bautista, Gaffney and Eichmann netted third-period goals for the 9-0 final.
The Red Dragons close the regular season with a pair of key NEWHL games next weekend at Canton.
