Plattsburgh clinches top seed in NEWHL Playoffs

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.-Second ranked SUNY Plattsburgh (18-2-1, 13-0-1 SUNYAC) never trailed as they defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (2-15, 1-10) 8-3 on Friday evening.

The Cardinals scored five goals in the first period, and three more in the third to finish the game 8-3. Plattsburgh's Nicole Unsworth led the team with two goals and three assists. Mae Olshansky followed close behind, scoring two goals for the Cardinals. Annie Katonka also tallied two goals and an assist for the Cardinals. Ivy Boric and Kaitlin Drew-Mead also each scored a goal with Boric notching one assist and Drew-Mead earning two. Goalie Cloe Beaubien made 20 saves throughout the game to help her team earn the win.

Senior forward Stephanie Dunlap (Bath, Mich./Meijer U19 AAA) scored a power-play goal for Potsdam, 6:29 into the second period to put the Bears on the scoresheet. Junior forward Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State) and senior captain Ellie Cleary (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) assisted the goal. Junior forward Emily DelleNeve (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) scored the second goal for the Bears at 14:25 of the second period.

Junior defensemen Abigail Lyon (Wintrop, N.Y./Lake Placid Rockets) and junior forward Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) picked up the assists. Senior forward Mackenzie Martin ended the scoring for Potsdam at 10:22 of the third period. Merrill and graduate student captain Alexis Clark (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) earned the assists for the goal.

Potsdam is back in action on Saturday as they finish the series with the Cardinals at 3 p.m.
