Potsdam scores 3 unanswered goals in 4-1 win over Canton

Canton, NY – Desiree Snook scored her seventh goal of the season, but SUNY Potsdam scored three unanswered goals to earn a 4-1 win v. the Roos in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bears got on the board first at 10:06 of the opening period scoring off a Canton turnover deep in its defensive zone. Kaylee Merrill used a strong forecheck as she took down Canton's Micayla MacIntyre to the ice. Merrill deked Sirena Alvarez beating her glove side for the 1-0 lead. 
  • SUNY Potsdam held a 10-3 shots on goal advantage in the opening period leading 1-0 after one.
  • Canton knotted the game at one apiece at 4:36 of the second period. Brianna Medved kept the puck in at the point as it deflected off a Potsdam skater and went cross-ice to Iida Laitinen. She centered a pass from the left circle to Desiree Snook in the low slot as she beat Ellie Zurfluh past the blocker.
  • The Bears regained the one goal lead at 17:05 of the frame. Alex Quinn scored from the right point through traffic out in front with Karley Green and Makenzie Martin picking up assists on the play. The Roos held a 13-9 lead in second period shots skating to second intermission trailing by one.
  • Potsdam added an important insurance goal just 1:32 into the third period. Canton turned the puck over in its offensive zone and Megan Teachout beat the Roos to the puck at the other end of the ice below the right circle. She skated behind the net and found Karley Green at the far post who beat Alvarez low past the glove side.
  • The Bears made it 4-1 at 9:33 of the third when Teachout's shot appeared to ring off the left post and out, but the officials blew the play dead for a Potsdam goal resulting in the 4-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Potsdam held a 28-25 advantage in shots, while the Roos controlled face offs, 35-19.
  • Alvarez made 24 saves for Canton, while Zurfluh also stopped 24 shots for Potsdam.
