Canton, NY – Sirena Alvarez made 33 saves but Ashlyn McGrath and Morgan Shines led visiting Oswego State with a goal and assist each as the Lakers earned a 5-0 win in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lakers got on the board first at 11:31 of the opening period off the stick of Lizzie Burke. Sirena Alvarez stopped Shines initial shot, but Burke stuffed home the rebound with Kyleigh Grugin also picking up an assist on the play.
  • Oswego State added a late shorthanded goal with just 28 seconds left in the first period. Philomena Teggart cleared the puck from the Laker defensive zone and Simone Bednarik outskated a pair of Roos to the puck deking Alvarez for the 2-0 lead. Ariella Haas also earned a helper. The Lakers held a 14-4 shots on goal edge in the opening period and 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
  • The Lakers took control of the game with a pair of scores 46 seconds apart early in the second. At the 2:14 mark Shines scored on a wrist shot blocker side with Grugin and Avery Webster picking up assists.
  • Oswego took a 4-0 lead at the 3:00 mark when Mia Conboy took a shot from the right point that was deflected out in front by McGrath. Alvarez made the initial stop but Taylor Hudon put home the rebound at the far post. The visitors outshot Canton 14-6 in the second to lead 4-0 after 40 minutes.
  • The Lakers added a fifth goal at 16:20 of the third as McGrath scored with assists credited to Rachel Corbett and Amanda Zenstein.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Oswego state outshot Canton 38-14 and held a slim 26-24 advantage in face offs.
  • Alvarez recorded 33 saves for the Roos, while Joanna Hiebert finished with a 14 save shutout for the visitors.
  • Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play, but Oswego scored a short handed goal.
