Katonka Scores Twice in Plattsburgh's 3-1 Win Over Cortland

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team scored three unanswered goals, including two from graduate student forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite), to defeat SUNY Cortland, 3-1, in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action Saturday afternoon at the Upstate Medical University Arena.
 
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 2 in the DCU/USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll.
 
Both teams were scoreless on the power play, with Cortland going 0-for-4 and Plattsburgh State going 0-for-1. The Cardinals finished the game with a 30-24 edge in shots on goal.
 
Plattsburgh State raised its unbeaten streak to 12 with the win and rises to 17-2-1 overall (12-0-1 NEWHL) on the season. The Cardinals next host SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. Cortland falls to 13-4-1 overall (8-4-1 NEWHL) and next visits SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m.
 
Cortland took a 1-0 lead at 8:46 of the first period, as sophomore forward Jillian Hlasnick one-timed a shot into the back of the net from the slot off a pass from first-year forward Mia Hlasnick.
 
Just 11 seconds into the second period, the Cardinals tied the game. Plattsburgh State won the opening face-off, and first-year forward Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) carried the puck down the right wing to ignite a 3-on-1 rush. Stumm passed to senior forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) in the left circle, and Krauseneck centered a pass to Katonka in the slot that Katonka poked past the Cortland netminder.
 
Katonka gave Plattsburgh State the lead at 17:21 of the second, forcing a turnover in the defensive zone before scoring glove side from the low slot.
 
Sophomore forward Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, Ill./North American Hockey Academy) added an insurance goal at 12:17 of the third period. Senior forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) carried the puck into the offensive zone, and Olshansky picked up a loose puck along the goal line before eventually scoring on a tight angle from the bottom of the left face-off circle. Graduate student forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) also earned an assist on the play.
 
Junior goaltender Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, Colo./Ontario Hockey Academy) picked up the win in goal for the Cardinals, making 23 stops. First-year goaltender Molly Goergen turned aside 27 shots in the loss for the Red Dragons.

Plattsburgh defeats Cortland 3-1 (Cortland Story)

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The nationally second-ranked Plattsburgh women's ice hockey team scored three straight goals in earning a 3-1 win against Cortland Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at the Upstate Medical University Arena in Syracuse. The Red Dragons dropped to 13-4-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the league. The Cardinals improved to 17-2-1 and 11-0-1.

Sophomore Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) notched her third goal of the season for Cortland. Freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) assisted on the goal. Freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) turned aside 27 shots.

Graduate student Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, PA/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) netted two goals to lead Plattsburgh. Sophomore Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, IL/NAHA) added a goal, and graduate student Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls/Buffalo Bisons), seniors Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, MI/Northern Cyclones) and Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, WI/East Coast Wizards) and freshman Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, PA/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) each chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, CO/Ontario Hockey Academy) made 23 saves.

Cortland opened the scoring at 8:46 of the first period when Jillian Hlasnick scored on a one-time shot in the slot off a pass from the right side from her sister Mia Hlasnick. The lead held until very early into the second period. Shortly after the opening faceoff, Katonka scored right in front on a one timer 11 seconds into the period to even the game at 1-1.

Katonka scored what proved to be the game winner at 17:21 of the second period on an unassisted effort just as a Cortland power play ended. The Red Dragons took a penalty on the goal to give the Cardinals a power-play chance, but Plattsburgh was whistled for back-to-back penalties late in the period eventually giving Cortland a two-player advantage for 58 seconds. The Red Dragons were unable to capitalize, and the Cardinals maintained their 2-1 lead.

Cortland had another power-play opportunity just before the midway point of the third period but could not score the equalizer. Less than two minutes after the penalty expired, Oshansky added an insurance goal on a rebound from the left side. The Red Dragons pulled Goergen for an extra skater with 38 seconds on the clock and maintained possession in the Plattsburgh defensive zone, but couldn't cut into their deficit as the Cardinals clinched the 3-1 victory.
