Cortland, Plattsburgh settle for 3-3 deadlock

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) stopped a career-high 44 shots, including 23 through the third period and overtime, as the Cortland women's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie versus nationally second-ranked Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons' record now stands at 13-3-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the league, while the Cardinals are 16-2-1 and 11-0-1 and the tie is only the second time in NEWHL play that Plattsburgh has not earned a victory.

Senior Emily Kromer (Angola/Nazareth College) recorded a goal and an assist for Cortland. Graduate student Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) and freshman Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School) each added goals. Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars), senior Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) and juniors Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) collected one assist apiece.

Graduate students Erin McArdle (Macomb, MI/Belle Tire) and Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, PA/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) each tallied a goal and an assist for Plattsburgh. Senior Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) netted a goal, and four others each picked up an assist. Senior goalie Ashley Davis (Winterville, NC/Northwood School) made 27 saves.

Schmelzer gave the Cardinals a 1-0 led just 2:37 into the game, scoring on a shot through traffic from inside the blue line. Cramer tied the game1:43 before the end of the first period with a wrist shot from the left side on a 3-on-2 break.

McArdle put Plattsburgh back in front, 2-1, with a screen shot from the point on the power play. DeVoe tied the game at 2-2 at 6:19, knocking in a rebound in front on the power play after an initial save by Davis on a point shot from McCabe. One minute, 28 seconds later, Kromer gave Cortland its first lead of the game, scoring on a rebound after Donegan's shot was stopped. Katonka sent the game to the third period tied at 3-3 when she scored at the right side of the net at 19:13.

Goergen came up with several key saves in the third period, stopping all 18 shots she faced, including three while the Cardinals skated with a two-player advantage for 40 seconds. Each team then had power-play chances late but neither could take advantage as the game went to overtime with the teams skating three aside.

In the extra period, the Red Dragons had the first two shots before the Cardinals registered five consecutive shots, all denied by Goergen. In the closing moments, Cortland controlled play and had three excellent chances to net the game winner but Davis was up to the task as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

No. 2 Plattsburgh State Women's Ice Hockey Battles Cortland to 3-3 Overtime Tie

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team battled SUNY Cortland to a 3-3 overtime tie in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) game Friday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Graduate student defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) and graduate student forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) each had a goal and an assist for the Cardinals, while senior forward Emily Kromer registered a goal and an assist for the Red Dragons.
 
Both teams were 1-for-5 on the power play, while Plattsburgh State outshot Cortland by a 47-30 margin.
 
Plattsburgh State moves to 16-2-1 overall (11-0-1 NEWHL), while Cortland pushes its record to 13-3-1 overall (8-3-1 NEWHL). The two teams close out their season series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Upstate Medical University Arena in Syracuse, N.Y.
 
Senior defenseman Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) put the Cardinals on the board at 2:37 of the first period. Junior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) chipped a puck from the right point into the slot before a Red Dragon swiped the puck toward the blue line. Schmelzer gained control of the puck in the high slot and scored on a shot that went through the five-hole for her first goal of the season. First-year forward Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, N.Y./Bishop Kearney Selects) also earned an assist on the goal.
 
At 18:17 of the first, Cortland leveled the score at 1-all. Kromer forced a neutral-zone turnover, spurring a 3-on-2 rush into Plattsburgh State's end. Kromer centered a pass to first-year forward Meggan Cramer, and Cramer scored high glove side from the hash marks. Senior defenseman Kirsten MacDowell earned an assist on the play as well.
 
McArdle put Plattsburgh State out in front with a power-play goal at 1:32 of the second period. Katonka fed McArdle on the point with a pass from the left circle, and McArdle took a shot that navigated through traffic and beat the goalie high glove side. First-year defenseman Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) also earned an assist.
 
At 6:19 of the second, Cortland tied the game up with a power-play marker of its own. Graduate student forward Grace Schnorr passed D-to-D to junior defenseman Molly McCabe, and McCabe took a shot from the point that senior goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) saved.  Graduate student forward Katie DeVoe then banged in the rebound in the low slot.
 
Kromer gave the Red Dragons the lead at 7:47 of the second period. She banked the puck off the boards in the defensive zone to help break herself forward, and she took a shot that Davis turned aside with a pad save. Junior forward Dany Donegan collected the rebound and took a shot that went wide right of the goal, but the puck stopped along the right post after hitting a Cardinal defender's skate. Kromer then poked the puck inside the right post.
 
Katonka netted the game-tying goal with 47 seconds left in the second period. McArdle took a slap shot from the left point that was saved, and Katonka hammered home the rebound. Senior forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) also earned an assist on the goal.
 
Plattsburgh State peppered Cortland's first-year goaltender Molly Goergen with shots in the third period, as Goergen made 18 stops in the final regulation frame to help force overtime. In the overtime period, both teams had several offensive chances, but both goalies stood on their heads by making five stops each.
 
Davis finished the game with 27 saves for Plattsburgh State, while Goergen made 44 stops for Cortland.
