POTSDAM, N.Y.-The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (5-11-1, 3-7-1 NEWHL) never trailed as it defeated SUNY Canton (12-3-1, 6-3-1) 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. In her Bears debut, junior forward Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State) had two goals and two assists, while freshman forward Karley Green (Potsdam, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) added two more. Sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, Colo./Team Colorado) made 30 saves for her third career victory.
Teachout opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 10:02 of the first period. Canton junior goalie Sirena Alvarez (Finland/Banff Hockey Academy) stopped all 10 of the other shots that came her way in the period to keep her team in the contest. At 18:20, sophomore forward Meaghan Best (Whitby, Ontario/Whitby Jr. Wolves) scored her third goal of the weekend to send the teams into the first intermission tied at one.
Teachout set up Green at 6:41 of the middle stanza to give Potsdam the lead for good. At 11:02, a Green centering attempt was knocked into the goal off of a Kangaroo defender for the eventual game-winner. Graduate student assistant captain Allie Banas (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and Teachout had the assists. Zurfluh made 10 stops in the second and Potsdam led 3-1 after 20 minutes.
Both teams created more offensive opportunities in the third period, with Canton outshooting Potsdam 15-14. With Alvarez pulled for an extra attacker while on the power play, Roos sophomore forward Gracyn Emmerton (Oro-Medonte, Ontario/North York Storm) struck to make it a 3-2 contest. Any hopes of tying the game were dashed just 12 seconds later when Teachout buried a feed from junior forward Emily DellaNeve (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) to slam the door on the win.
