Alvarez Extends Program Record as Canton edges Morrisville 1-0

Canton, NY – Sirena Alvarez extended her single-season shutout program record to six Sarah Kosnaskie scored the game-winner 7 minutes, 47 seconds into the third period as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team earned a 1-0 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win v. Morrisville State on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period as the Roos held a slim 10-8 shots on goal advantage after one.
  • The Roos had a great chance five minutes into the second period as Meaghan Best's point blank one-timer was turned aside by Mustang goaltender Emma Plett.
  • The goaltenders continued to lead the way as Morrisville outshot Canton 13-5 in the second period but 13 saves from Sirena Alvarez kept the game tied after 40 minutes.
  • Canton broke the scoreless tie at 7:47 of the third period. Meaghan Best collected the puck behind her own goal and found Kelly Leathem who skated the puck through the neutral zone. Her initial shot was saved by Plett but Sarah Kosnaskie put home the rebound at the far post.
  • As Morrisville was attempting to pull the goalie with 1:07 remaining Brycelan Sunday's shot narrowly went just wide of the left post for an icing. The Mustangs then pulled Plett for the extra attacker getting one shot on goal in the final seconds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Alvarez finished with 28 saves on the night for her sixth shutout of the season extending her own single-season program record for shutouts. She previously broke Brooke Susac '20's mark of four which she accomplished on two occasions.
  • Entering Tuesday Alvarez's five shutouts ranked her second nationally in NCAA Division III.
  • Kosnaskie's goal is her eighth of the season which ranks second on the team.
  • Plett turned aside 24 shots for Morrisville.
  • The Roos went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, while the Mustangs were 2-for-2.
