Cortland rolls by Morrisville 5-1

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team improved to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the NEWHL with a 5-1 victory at Morrisville Friday afternoon at the IcePlex. The Mustangs fell to 4-8-1 and 2-5-1 with the loss.

Freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) led the Red Dragons with two goals. Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) tallied a goal and an assist, and senior Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs) and junior Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) each netted a goal.

Freshman Destiny Bautista (Quesnel, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) registered a career-high three assists, sophomore Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) collected two assists and graduate student Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) and senior Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) recorded one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) turned aside 12 shots in raising her season record to 5-1.

Kendra Johnston scored an unassisted goal for the Mustangs. Goalie Emma Plett made 30 saves.

Mia Hlasnick gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 9:08 into the first period with a one-time shot from the slot on a rebound in front. McCabe made it a 2-0 game 69 seconds later, taking a pass from Schnorr at the left point and sending a shot through traffic and past Plett. Johnston pulled the Mustangs to within 2-1 at the 12:24 mark of the first period when she intercepted a pass near the blue line, skated past a pair of Cortland defenders and slipped a shot past Hamid.

Hlasnick netted the lone goal of the second period. After winning a faceoff in Cortland's defensive zone, Hlasnick skated to the left boards where she controlled a pass that was flipped ahead by Bautista. Hlasnick then chipped the puck past a Morrisville player and finished off a breakaway to give the Red Dragons a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Cortland dominated the third period statistically, outshooting the Mustangs 17-1. Metcalfe made it a 4-1 score 29 seconds before the midway point of the period, knocking in a loose puck in front after Bautista threw a pass off Plett from the right side end line. Schnorr capped the scoring with her team-high 16th goal of the season less than a minute later, snapping a shot from the right circle inside the far post for the 5-1 final.
