Red Dragons slay Knights 7-0, complete weekend sweep

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team scored three goals in the first two periods en route to a 7-0 victory versus Arcadia University Saturday afternoon in the second game of a two-game series at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons close out the first semester with an 8-2 record. The Knights dropped to 1-9.

Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) led Cortland with four points on two goals and two assists. Graduate student Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) and senior Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) each tallied a goal and two assists. Senior Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs) and freshmen Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and Nat O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) added goals. Sophomore Kait Bourgeois (Cobden, ON/Ottawa Thunder) recorded two assists, while junior Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) and freshman Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School) each chipped in with an assist.

Sophomore Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) started in goal for the Red Dragons, making 12 saves through two periods. Senior Emily Steen (Windom, MN/Windom H.S.) turned aside five shots in the third period in her first action of the season. Freshman Sophia Szelag (East Windsor, NJ) made the start in goal for the Knights, registering 17 saves in the first period. Freshman Hannah Bergeron (Leominster, MA) played the final two periods, turning aside 28 shots.

Schnorr opened the scoring at 3:57 of the first period with a wrist shot from the right circle. The Red Dragons then tacked on two late goals to build a 3-0 lead. Hlasnick netted an unassisted goal at 18:59, and Gaffney scored on a loose puck in front at 19:30.

DeVoe made it a 4-0 game at 4:48 of the second period with a one-time shot from the slot off a pass from Schnorr. O'Brien scored an unassisted goal at 12:23 before Schnorr's second goal on a deflection in front at 14:14 put Cortland ahead 6-0. Metcalfe completed the scoring with a deflection in the high slot on the power play at the 14:45 mark of the third period for the 7-0 final.
