Canton, NY – Sirena Alvarez made 12 saves for her fourth shutout of the season and Halle McKinnon led the women's hockey team with a goal and two assists as the Roos improved to 8-2-1 on the season with a 5-0 win v. Wilkes University on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SUNY Canton got on the board first at 13:01 of the opening period. Karena Barrett collected a loose puck at the near boards in her defensive zone and found Desiree Snook skating through the neutral zone. Snook roofed a wrist shot top shelf bar down for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Roos held a 15-6 advantage in shots and took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
  • Canton doubled their lead at 10:27 of the middle period when Iida Laitinen skated in on a breakaway and beat Colonel goaltender Ally Jolly over the blocker.
  • The hosts took a 3-0 lead three minutes later with the skater advantage. Laitinen fed the puck to McKinnon at the right circle. She hit Sandrene Garafolo at the point who ripped a shot past Jolly as Gracyn Emmerton provided a nice screen in front of goal.
  • Canton made it 4-0 at the 16:22 when Micayla MacIntyre skated into the top of the slot and wristed a shot top shelf. McKinnon and Victoria McGarrity picked up helpers on the play.
  • The Roos held a 15-3 shots advantage in the second period and 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.
  • Canton extended the lead to five when McKinnon scored on the power play at 4:02 of the third off passes from Garofalo and MacIntyre.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • SUNY Canton went 2-for-4 on the power play and was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
  • The Roos outshot the Colonels 40-12 and held the upper hand in face offs, 37-24.
  • Alvarez made 12 saves in her fourth shutout of the season. Jolly turned aside 35 shots for Wilkes.
