Colby blanks Potsdam 4-0 in Spartan Invitational

CASTLETON, VT.-Colby College (5-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-7-1) 4-0 on Friday night in the first round of the Castleton Spartan Invitational. Freshman goalie Hannah Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made 26 saves for the Bears.

Jillian Mazzocca opened the scoring 3:54 into the contest to give the Mules a 1-0 lead. Colby kept the pressure on thanks to two power plays, but Barrett kept them off the board for the remainder of the period.

Stephanie Lane doubled the lead at 2:36 of the second period. The Bears evened the play after the goal and pressured the Mules with two power plays of their own. Potsdam outshot Colby 11-7 in the middle 20 minutes, but trailed 2-0 after two periods.

The Mules took advantage of another power play as the third period opened. McKinley Karpa scored on the man advantage at 1:32. Colby never let up and struck again at 8:33. Lexi Cafiero closed the scoring at 4-0 with an even-strength tally.

Nina Prunster stopped all 16 shots she faced in the first 51:53. Mandy Busky closed out the shutout with four saves in the last 8:07. The Mules outshot the Bears 30-20. Colby was 1-for-3 on the power-play and Potsdam finished 0-for-4.

The Bears now face Connecticut College in tomorrow's consolation game at 1 p.m.
