PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey was edged by No. 5 Elmira College, 4-3 in overtime, in the Cardinal/Panther Classic consolation game on Sunday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (6-2-0) next plays a road Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) game against SUNY Potsdam at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. Elmira (8-1-0) hosts Castleton University at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.  

The game remained scoreless until 18:52 of the first period when Plattsburgh State took a 1-0 lead. Junior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) had an initial shot on goal that was kicked out by the goaltender. First-year forward Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) got to the rebound in the slot and quickly scored on a wrist shot for her third goal of the season.

Elmira struck quickly in the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Senior forward Nary McCafferty skated down the ice on a 3-on-1 rush and scored her sixth goal of the season with a wrist shot from below the right faceoff dot at the 1:08 mark. Sophomore defenseman Jenna Ellis and first-year goaltender Leonie Kuehberger tallied the assists. 

With under five minutes to play in the second period, Plattsburgh State responded with a power-play goal to take a 2-1 lead. Junior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored her seventh goal of the season on a wrist shot from below the left faceoff dot at 15:12. First-year defenseman Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) and senior forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) tallied the assists.

However, Elmira responded to tie the game at 2-2 at 18:55 of the second period. Junior forward Holly Riva finished off a rush with a close-range shot through the goaltender's five-hole. Senior forward Brooke McArdle and first-year defenseman Katie Manning recorded the assists.

In the third period, Elmira took a 3-2 lead on a shorthanded goal at the 1:10 mark. McCafferty finished off a rush with a backhand over the right shoulder of the goaltender. Sophomore defenseman Lexi Hoffman and junior forward Claire Meeder tallied the assists.

Unsworth responded for Plattsburgh State with her seventh goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 at 7:54 of the third period. Unsworth forced a turnover at the left sideboards, skated behind the net, and scored with a wraparound shot inside the right post. 

The score remained tied and the game headed to overtime.

In overtime, Plattsburgh State's junior forward Tatem Cheney (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady 67's) had a breakaway, but her shot hit the crossbar at 1:55 of overtime and the game remained tied. 

Later in overtime, Elmira's senior forward Eliza Beaudin skated onto the puck in the left circle and unleashed a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot that went over the goaltender's right shoulder and under the crossbar to hand Plattsburgh State the 4-3 setback in overtime. 

Senior goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School), who made seven saves and allowed three goals in 41:10 played. Junior goaltender Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) is now 2-1-0 on the season. Nease made seven saves and allowed one goal over 22:01 played in relief of Davis. Kuehberger (6-1-0) stopped 44 shots for Elmira.

Plattsburgh State finished 1-of-4 on the power play and Elmira was 0-of-4.

The Cardinals held a 47-18 edge in shots on goal.
