Canton continues unbeaten start with 7-1 win at Neumann

Aston, PA – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team continued its strong start to the season with a 7-1 road win in non-conference action at Neumann University on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win the Roos remain unbeaten at 4-0-1 on the young season, while the Knights drop to 1-7-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SUNY Canton got on the board first at 1:27 of the opening period. Gracyn Emmerton won a faceoff at the left circle back to Madelyne Petrie at the point. Petrie fed the puck in deep off the end boards where Emmerton deflected the puck out in front to Hannah Clement who buried a shot top shelf past Knight goaltender Michelle Windand-Bacon.
  • The Roos doubled their lead less than 90 seconds later. Sarah Kosnaskie fed the puck cross ice from left to right as Petrie's initial shot from the point was saved. Meaghan Best's rebound shot was turned aside once again by Windand-Bacon before Iida Laitinen put home the second rebound at the far post.
  • Brianna Medved extended the lead to three when she recorded her first career goal just more than midway through the opening period. She beat the goaltender near post over the glove side.
  • Two minutes later ach team had a skater in the penalty box and with open ice the Roos took advantage. Victoria McGarrity won the faceoff back to Kosnaskie. She left the puck back to Micayla MacIntyre at the left point. With plenty of open space MacIntyre skated toward goal ripping a slapshot into the back of the net as she made the water bottle pop for the 4-0 advantage.
  • The Roos held a 25-5 shots on goal advantage and 4-0 lead on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play.
  • Neumann got one back just 54 seconds into the middle period with the skater advantage. Georgia Wunder cut into the low slot redirecting a quick shot past Roos goaltender Sirena Alvarez. Katelyn Brown and Mikaylee Henhawk were credited with helpers on the play.
  • The Roos regained a four-goal advantage less than a minute into the third period. Danielle Goner put home a shot from the left point with Karena Barrett and Desiree Snook picking up assists on the play.
  • Canton closed out the game with a pair of insurance goals late in the third period.
  • At the 16:20 mark Gracyn Emmerton stuffed home a loose puck out in front on the power play. Snook and MacIntyre were credited with assists on the play.
  • Kosnaskie concluded the scoring at she beat a pair of Knight defenders and lifted a nifty backhanded shelf top shelf at 19:07 of the final period.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Roos held a 48-17 advantage in shots, while Neumann had the slim 35-31 edge in faceoffs.
  • Both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play.
  • Kosnaskie, MacIntyre and Emmerton paced the Roos with a goal and assist each. Snook and Petrie supplied two assists each. Kosnaskie finished with a game-best +4 on-ice rating.
  • Alvarez made 16 saves as she remained unbeaten at 4-0-1 on the season.
  • Windand-Bacon turned aside 41 shots for the Knights.
