Plattsburgh wins 44th straight home game, beats Morrisville 9-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey completed a two-game Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) series sweep with a 9-0 win over SUNY Morrisville on Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. 

Seven different Cardinals scored as Plattsburgh State (6-0-0, 5-0-0 NEWHL) extended its NCAA Division III women's ice hockey record home-winning streak to 44 games. 

Plattsburgh State next hosts No. 10 Endicott College as part of the Cardinal/Panther Classic at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Morrisville (2-4-1, 1-3-1 NEWHL) plays at Hamilton College on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. 

Sophomore forward Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, Ill./North American Hockey Academy) scored her first two career goals and graduate student forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) scored twice. Senior forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) and first-year defenseman Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) each tallied one goal and two assists for a game-high three points. Senior forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) and graduate student forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) both tallied one goal and one assist for two points. Junior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) tallied two assists.      

Plattsburgh State scored twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Katonka scored 49 seconds into the game. Katonka skated across the front of the net and scored with a backhand through the five-hole to make the score 1-0. 

Just over seven minutes later, Drew-Mead got the puck in the defensive zone and skated down the ice before scoring on a backhand shot from right in front of the Morrisville net to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with her third goal of the season.

Plattsburgh State pulled away with four goals in the second period to make the score 6-0 after 40:00 of play.

Norton, the reigning NEWHL Rookie of the Week, made the score 3-0 with a power-play goal at 12:38 of the second period. After getting a pass from junior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), Norton took a wrist shot from the high slot that beat the goaltender high on the blocker side.

Only 25 seconds later, junior forward Tatem Cheney (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady 67's) scored her first goal of the season at 13:03 of the second period. On a rush, Cheney took a pass from Unsworth outside the crease and directed a shot through the goaltender's five-hole to make the score 4-0.   

Unsworth then scored a power-play goal at 16:36 with a wrist shot from the slot to make the score 5-0. It was Unsworth's sixth goal of the season.

Just six seconds later, Olshansky tallied her first collegiate goal to make the score 6-0. At 16:42, Olshanksy took a wrist shot from the right circle that beat the goaltender on the blocker side.

The Cardinals tacked on three more goals in the third period to make the final score 9-0. 

First-year forward Tes Hurd (Ann Arbor, Mich./HoneyBaked) and Norton played the puck out of the zone to Krauseneck. After skating into the left side of the offensive zone, Krauseneck fired a shot that went off the goalie's glove and inside the right post to make the score 7-0 at 4:38 of the third period.

Less than a minute later, Katonka tallied her second goal of the game and eighth of the season to make the score 8-0. In front of the net, Katonka scored with a backhand while spinning and falling to the ice at 5:31 of the third period. 

Olshansky capped off the scoring with her second goal of the game at 7:50 of the third period. First-year forward Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, N.Y./Bishop Kearny Selects) forced a turnover by the left sideboards in the offensive zone and pushed the puck to sophomore forward Rivers Morris (Braintree, Mass./Thayer Academy). Morris played a pass to Olshansky in the slot and Olshansky scored with a high wrist shot to make the score 9-0.  

Junior goaltender Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) improved to 2-0-0 on the year with a 20-save shutout.

First-year goaltender Mak Ganje (0-2-1) made 13 saves and allowed two goals in the first period for Morrisville. First-year netminder Elizabeth Timby recorded 10 saves and allowed four goals as she played the second period. First-year netminder Emma Plett allowed three goals and made 14 saves as she played the third period.

Plattsburgh State finished 2-of-4 on the power play. Morrisville finished 0-of-3. 

The Cardinals held a 46-20 advantage in shots on goal.
