Schnorr, Hlasnick each score twice as Cortland beats Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesar's) and freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each netted a pair of goals to lead the Cortland women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 victory in NEWHL action Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the league, while the Bears fell to 1-3-1 and 0-2-1.

Freshman Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School) also added a goal for Cortland, the first oh her career. Freshman Nat O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) collected two assists, and six others each chipped in with one assist. Sophomore goalie Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) registered 17 saves.

Junior Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, AK/Anchorage North Stars) scored Potsdam's goal off assists from junior Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne/St. Lawrence Steel) and freshman Sara Barrett (Tonawanda/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles). Sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, CO/Team Colorado) made 37 saves.

After a scoreless first period, the Red Dragons netted three goals in the second period. Schnorr scored at the 4:57 mark with a shot off the pipe from a sharp angle on the right side. Cramer made it a 2-0 game at 10:01 with a rebound shot at the left side of the crease. Schnorr's second goal and team-high seventh of the season, came on a one-time shot in front at 17:27.

Mia Hlasnick then netted back-to-back goals in the third period for a 5-0 Cortland lead. She scored at 3:13 when she stole the puck and tallied a wrap around goal. Her second goal of the night came at 17:05 as she finished off a breakaway. The Bears spoiled the shutout bid with 6.6 seconds on the clock when Merrill converted a breakaway for the 5-1 final.

CORTLAND, N.Y.-SUNY Cortland (5-1, 1-0 NEWHL) scored three times in the second period en route to a 5-1 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (1-3-1, 0-2-1) on Friday night. Sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, Colo./Team Colorado) made 37 saves and junior forward Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) scored for the Bears.

The defense was tight and goaltending sharp throughout the scoreless first period. Scoring chances were hard to come by. The Red Dragons edged Potsdam in shots 11-7. Cortland was unable to capitalize on the first power play of the contest. Zurfluh and Red Dragons goalie Anna Hamid kept their opponents off the board through the opening 20 minutes.

Cortland scored three times in the second period. Grace Schnorr opened the scoring at 4:47. Meggan Cramer struck at 10:01. Schnorr buried her second at 17:17. The Red Dragons dominated the play throughout middle stanza, outshooting Potsdam 21-5. Despite 18 more saves from Zurfluh, the Bears trailed by three after 40 minutes.

Cortland got its fourth just 3:13 into the third period as Mia Hlasnick struck. Hlasnick tacked on her second at 17:05 and Cortland led 5-0. With just six seconds left Merrill scored for Potsdam to break up the shutout. Junior defenseman Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) and freshman defenseman Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each assisted on the goal.

Hamid finished with 17 saves to earn the win for the Red Dragons. Cortland was 0-for-2 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-1.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. when the Bears head to Oswego State.
