Cortland rallies pass Oswego 2-1 in key early-season contest

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team opened up its home schedule with a come-from-behind 2-1 win versus Oswego Friday night in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league, while the Lakers dropped to 3-1-1 and 1-1-1.

Senior Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Vipers) and freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored Cortland's goals. Seniors Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs) and Emily Kromer (Angola/Nazareth College), sophomore Kait Bourgeois (Cobden, ON/Ottawa Thunder) and freshman Nat O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) made a career-high 42 saves.

Sophomore Morgan Shines (Marengo, IL/Chicago Mission) netted Oswego's goal with senior Philomena Teggart (Pickering, ON/Durham West Jr. Lightning) and junior Ariella Haas (Albany/Elmira College) assisting. Sophomore goalie Bryn White (Centennial, CO/Boston Shamrocks) turned aside 21 shots.

Shines gave Oswego a 1-0 lead at 11:18 of the first period, deflecting a shot in the slot on the power play. DeVoe evened the game at 1-1 6:27 into the second period, deflecting a pass from O'Brien past White on the power play. Hlasnick scored the game winner at 14:49 of the second, flipping in a backhand shot from just outside of the crease.

The Lakers outshot the Red Dragons, 9-4, in the third period as they pressed for the equalizer. Late in the period, Oswego killed off a Cortland power play but the Red Dragons were able to keep the Lakers from clearing their defensive zone, preventing any chance of pulling White for an extra skater and sealing the 2-1 victory.
