GENEVA, N.Y. - William Smith College (1-0) overpowered the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (0-1) 6-0 on Friday evening in the team's season opener. Bears freshman goalie Hannah Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made 36 saves in her collegiate debut.
The Herons jumped on Potsdam early, scoring three goals in the first period. Annabel Ziskin opened the scoring at 4:46. The next two William Smith markers came just 17 seconds apart. Taylor Ettore struck at 13:11 and Emily Martino scored at 13:28. Barrett made 13 saves in the opening 20 minutes.
Alex George scored the only goal of the second period to extend the lead to 4-0. Each team killed a penalty in the middle stanza.
The Bears killed a third penalty three minutes into the third period, but the Herons kept pressing. At 12:58, Tiffany Foster made it a five-goal contest. Ava Cornforth closed the scoring with just 48.6 seconds left.
Amanda Aalto made 24 saves to earn the shutout for William Smith. The Herons finished with a 42-24 advantage in shots and were 0-for-4 on the power play. The Bears were 0-for-2 on the man advantage.
The teams square off again tomorrow at Maxcy Ice Arena at 3 p.m.
