CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's hockey team broke open a close game with a four-goal second period and defeated Canton, 5-1, in the season-opening game for both teams.

Junior Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) led the Red Dragons with two goals. Freshmen Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and Elena Eichmann (Fairport/Syracuse Nationals) each netted her first career goal, and sophomore Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs) added a goal.

Junior Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) and sophomore Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) each recorded two assists. Freshman Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) registered her first career point with an assist, and sophomore Lindsay Reyes (Chino Hills, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) also collected an assist. Junior goalie Chelsea Allain (Malta/Canterbury School) turned aside 19 shots.

Junior ALyssa Suzuki (Auckland, New Zealand/OHA) scored for the Kangaroos. Freshmen Emily Matthew (Buffalo/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and Caeley Smith (Yonkers/Taft Prep) assisted on the goal. Senior Brooke Susac (Bowmanville, ON/Clarington Flames) started in goal, making 17 saves in 31:10. Freshman Sirena Alvarez (Jyvaskyla, Finland/HTI Stars) played the final 28:50, stopping 14 shots.

Schnorr gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 7:59 into the game with a rebound goal in front. The Red Dragons then netted the first three goals of the second period to go ahead 4-0. Donegan scored at 6:48, Eichmann scored at 10:36 and Metcalfe netted her goal at 11:10. After Suzuki scored at 11:44, Schnorr completed the scoring with a breakaway goal at 15:07.
