BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 2/3 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team extended its winning streak to 10, defeating Buffalo State, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at the Buffalo State Ice Arena in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action. The Cardinals remain perfect in NEWHL play this season through 15 games.
 
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 2 in the D3hockey.com Women's Top-10 Poll and No. 3 in the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll.
 
The Cardinals finished with a 46-12 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Bengals were scoreless in four chance with the extra skater.
 
Senior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) scored twice in the victory, while sophomore defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) tallied three assists.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 21-2-0 overall (15-0-0 NEWHL) with the win, while Buffalo State slips to 6-15-2 overall (3-10-1 NEWHL) with the loss. The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow at 2 p.m., which will serve as the Cardinals' final NEWHL game of the season.
 
Freshman forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) put the Cardinals on the board 1:38 into the contest, relying on assists from McArdle and sophomore forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons), while Buffalo State's junior defenseman Cheyenne Matson tied the score at 1-all at 3:29 of the first period on assists from junior forward Lila Toczek and sophomore defenseman Courtney Cavarello.
 
Sophomore forward Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) buried the game-winner at 15:34 of the first on a feed from senior forward Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School), and freshman defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) added much-needed insurance to Plattsburgh State's cause with 44 seconds left in the second period.
 
Moriarty scored twice in the third period. She found the back of the net on the power play at 8:31 of the third on assists from McArdle and sophomore forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) before scoring again at 13:04 of the third on feeds from Katonka and junior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones).
 
Senior goaltender Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) made 11 saves in the victory for the Cardinals, while sophomore goaltender Bri Gawronski turned aside 41 shots in the loss for the Bengals.
