BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 2/3 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team wrapped up a perfect 16-0-0 mark in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action and stretched its winning streak to 11 games with a 7-1 victory over Buffalo State in its NEWHL finale Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.

Sophomore forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) led the Cardinals with three points on two goals and an assist. Her goal on the power play at 8:47 of the second period gave her sole possession of third in the program's single-season record book for power-play goals with 11.
 
Senior forward Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) and sophomore forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) each tallied three assists, while senior forward Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) scored twice. Senior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) collected two points on a goal and an assist.
 
The Cardinals finished with a 61-14 edge in shots on goal and went 3-for-9 on the power play. The Bengals were scoreless in six chances with the extra skater.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 22-2-0 overall (16-0-0 NEWHL) with the win and hosts Middlebury College in its regular-season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. Buffalo State drops to 6-16-2 overall (3-11-1 NEWHL) with the loss and hosts SUNY Potsdam in its season finale tomorrow at 3 p.m.
 
Katonka scored exactly one minute into the contest on assists from Moriarty and junior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones), while Moriarty made it a 2-0 game at 4:23 of the first period on assists from sophomore forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) and Katonka. Freshman forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) added to the Cardinals' cause at 18:32 of the first, relying on helpers from Millen and sophomore defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire), to hand Plattsburgh State a 3-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.
 
Buffalo State got on the board with a shorthanded goal by junior forward Lila Toczek at 4:03 of the second period, as Toczek used a feed from senior forward Emma Ruggiero. Songin answered 23 seconds later with a power-play goal, tallying on assists from freshman defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) and Drew-Mead. Katonka also scored on the power play—doing so at 8:47 of the second on assists from Drew-Mead and Millen—while freshman forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) scored unassisted at 17:16 of the second period to hand Plattsburgh State a 6-1 advantage heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
 
Songin netted another power-play goal at 5:05 of the third period, relying on assists from Drew-Mead and Millen. That ended up being the final goal of the contest despite the Cardinals owning a 16-2 advantage in shots on goal in the third.
 
Senior goaltender Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) made 13 saves in the victory for the Cardinals, while sophomore goaltender Bri Gawronski made 54 stops in the loss for Buffalo State, including a save on a penalty shot at 16:44 of the second.
