Buffalo State Women's Hockey powers past Potsdam in season finale, 3-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Seniors Madeline Kromer (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) and Emma Ruggiero (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart) had a goal and an assist each to lead Buffalo State to a 3-2 victory over visiting Potsdam in today's season finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Natasha Steinle (Morrison, CO/CIHA) also scored for Buffalo State, and Lila Toczek (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) and Cheyenne Matson (Wasilla, AK/Matsu Career & Tech) had a pair of assists apiece.
  • Buffalo State outshot Potsdam 14-7 in the first period, but the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes belonged to the Bears.
  • The Bengals exploded for three goals in the second period, capitalizing on a five-minute major penalty that led to a pair of 5-on-3 advantages which both led to Buffalo State goals.
  • Kromer started things off with her second of the season from Toczek and Ruggiero.
  • Ruggiero put the Bengals ahead with her 14th of the year with assists from Matson and Kromer just 47 seconds later.
  • Steinle's fourth goal of the season less than four minutes after that completed the barrage.  Toczek and Matson drew the assists.
  • Buffalo State killed off a five-minute penalty of its own in the third period before the Bears cut the deficit to one with 3:05 remaining. 
  • Bri Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Mt. Mercy) closed the door from there and finished with 28 saves for the victory.
  • The Bengals outshot the Bears 35-30 for the game.
  • Buffalo State was 2 for 5 on the power play, while Potsdam was 0 for 4.

FOR THE FOES

  • Miranda Kolb scored both goals for Potsdam.

NOTEWORTHY

  • With her two points today, Ruggiero finished her career tied for 10th in school history with 52 points (28 goals and 24 assists).
