POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon), sophomore forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) and freshman forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) all scored twice, as the No. 2/3 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team stretched its winning streak to eight with a 7-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action Friday night at the Maxcy Ice Arena.

With her two goals, Moriarty upped her career point total to 135, taking sole possession of ninth on the program's all-time scoring list. Whitney and Katonka both finished with three points on the evening, adding an assist to their ledgers.
 
The Cardinals held a 46-13 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-2 on the power play. The Bears, meanwhile, were scoreless on three chances with the extra skater.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 19-2-0 overall (13-0-0 NEWHL) with the win, while Potsdam falls to 8-10-3 overall (5-5-2 NEWHL) with the loss. The two teams will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, with puck drop slated for 3 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the Cardinals will honor their five seniors as a part of Senior Day festivities.
 
The Cardinals opened scoring at 9:54 of the first period, as Whitney scored unassisted. She chipped the puck out of a scrum in the left corner and scored blocker side on a tight angle alongside the left post. Freshman forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) made it a 2-0 game at 17:11 of the first, as she took control of the puck in the neutral zone, split two defenders and deposited a wrist shot glove side into the back of the net. Senior forward Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) earned an assist on the play.
 
Just 1:24 into the second period, Katonka reached the scoresheet. Sophomore defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) took a shot from the left point that was blocked, and sophomore forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) collected the rebound in the right corner. She passed to Katonka along the back wall, and Katonka wrapped a shot around the left post that was denied with a pad save. With the puck loose on the doorstep, Whitney got a piece of it before Katonka hammered it in.
 
Moriarty scored back-to-back goals just 1:19 apart midway through the second period. On a 3-on-1 rush, senior forward Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) carried the puck into the zone and drew the attention of the goalie and a defender before backhanding a centering pass to Moriarty that Moriarty one-timed past the goal line. She struck again in transition shortly thereafter. Moriarty took a shot from the high slot that was saved before Katonka backhanded a shot attempt of her own that was also turned aside. The Estero, Fla., native then banged in the rebound along the right post to make it a 5-0 score.
 
Whitney scored her second goal of the game with 2:41 elapsed in the third. Sophomore defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) sent a stretch pass to Drew-Mead down the right wing, and Drew-Mead centered a pass to Whitney. Whitney ended up scoring five-hole from the high slot to bury her eighth marker of the season.
 
With 7:30 gone in the third period, Katonka scored on the power play to net what wound up being the final goal of the contest. Junior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) passed D-to-D to McArdle, and McArdle took a shot from the left point that was redirected into the goal by Katonka in the slot.
 
Senior goaltender Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) made 13 saves to earn her NCAA Division III-leading 11th shutout of the season. Junior goaltenders Alexa Pfeiffer and Kayla McCabe combined to make 39 saves in the loss for Potsdam.
