CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) scored early in the second period and Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) scored the game-winning goal as the Cortland women's ice hockey team defeated Oswego, 3-2, in NEWHL action Wednesday evening. With the win, the Red Dragons improve to 11-8-3 overall and also move into third place in the conference with a 4-8-3 record. The loss dwindles the Lakers to 9-8-3 and 4-7-2. 

Sophomore goalie Chelsea Allain (Saratoga/Canterbury School) recorded 29 saves for Cortland while former Red Dragon Rachael  Farmer (Grand Island/SUNY Cortland) racked up 38 saves.

Oswego found its way onto the scoreboard just four and a half minutes into the first period when Sara Cruise received a pass from Annika Neufield-Kreider on the left side of the ice. Cruise promptly sent the puck past Allain for the lone goal of the first period, giving Oswego a 1-0 lead. 

The second period had no shortage of action for either team. The Red Dragons found themselves in a power play opportunity nearly two minutes into the period and they took full advantage of the situation when Junior Emily Rose (Clayton/Syracuse Nationals) ripped a slap shot from the point that sneaked past Farmer for the Red Dragons first goal of the game. Sophomore Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Ceasars) and senior Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit) each recorded an assist on the game-tying power play goal. Nearly ten minutes later, the Lakers broke the tie on an unassisted short-handed goal from sophomore Emma Morisette. Morisette received her own rebound following a save from Allain and put the puck into the back of the net to give Oswego the 2-1 lead. 

Cortland tied the game five minutes into the third period on a Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) deflection following a shot from Schnorr. Schnorr recorded her second assist of the game on the goal while Gaffney added an assist of her own on the goal. Overtime seemed likely until Gaffney broke the tie with a Pippin-assisted one-timer from the right side and completed the Cortland comeback with just 3:50 left in the final period. Despite numerous scoring opportunities and the pulling of their goaltender with a minute remaining, the Lakers were unable to tie the game, giving the Red Dragons their fourth conference win.
