Red Dragons rally past Buffalo State, move into playoff position

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team scored a pair of third-period goals 56 seconds apart to erase a 1-0 deficit in defeating Buffalo St., 2-1, in NEWHL action Saturday afternoon to sweep the two-game home series. The Red Dragons improved to 9-7-3 overall and 2-7-3 in the conference, while the Bengals fell to 5-11-2 and 2-8-1.

Senior Katy Kennedy (East Greenbush/Troy-Albany Ice Cats) and sophomore Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) each netted a goal for Cortland. Juniors Allyson Edwards (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) and Abbey Paduano (Massena/Massena H.S.) and sophomore Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) collected one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Chelsea Allain (Saratoga/Canterbury School) made 32 saves in improving her record to 6-1-1 on the season.

Junior Lila Toczek (North Tonawanda/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored her 10th goal of the season for the Bengals off an assist from freshman Ky Lackey (Phoenix, AZ/Arizona Lady Coyotes). Sophomore goalie Bri Gawronski (Dunkirk/Buffalo Bisons) turned aside 26 shots.

Toczek gave Buffalo St. the lead with just 4.5 seconds remaining in the first period, knocking in her own rebound after Allain made back-to-back saves on shots from Lackey and Toczek.

Cortland had two power-play chances in the second period but could not convert as the Bengals took the 1-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of action. Kennedy tied the game at the 12:29 mark of the third period when her shot from the left point deflected off a Buffalo defender and past Gawronski. Less than a minute later, Schnorr took a pass from DeVoe, skated in alone on Gawronski and beat her with a double-move for her team-best 11th goal of the season. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, the Red Dragons took a minor penalty, but Cortland killed the Bengal power play. Buffalo St. pulled Gawronski for an extra skater with seven seconds on the clock but could not create a scoring chance as the Red Dragons clinched the victory.
