Plattsburgh notches 11-1 victory at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 2/2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team cruised to an 11-1 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) victory over SUNY Cortland Friday afternoon at Alumni Arena, as freshman forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) and sophomore forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) each netted a hat trick, while senior defenseman Maci Hoskins (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northwood School) scored her first collegiate goal.
 
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 2 in both the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll and the D3hockey.com Women's Top-10 Poll.

It marked Whitney's first collegiate hat trick, while Katonka finished with four points on three goals and an assist. Other Cardinals with multiple points included senior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) with three assists, Hoskins with a goal and an assist, freshman defenseman Hanna Rose (Chaumont, N.Y./Northwood School) with a goal and an assist, sophomore forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) with a goal and an assist and sophomore defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire), freshman defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) and freshman forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) each with two assists.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 14-2-0 overall (9-0-0 NEWHL) with the win, while Cortland falls to 7-6-3 overall (0-6-3 NEWHL) with the loss. The two teams will complete the series tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Cortland's Alumni Arena.
 
Whitney opened scoring 5:21 into the game. Hoskins passed D-to-D to Rose on the left point, and Rose threw a puck toward the net that Whitney deflected in. Brush scored at 9:20 of the first period to make it a 2-0 game, burying a rebound from a Katonka shot that was saved. Moriarty also earned an assist on Brush's marker. Senior forward Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) entered the goal column at 11:41 of the first. Krauseneck pushed the puck out in front from along the back wall, and freshman forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) took a shot that got caught up in traffic in front of the net. Songin then banged home the rebound to bury her third goal of the season.
 
Sophomore forward Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) added to the lead at 16:34 of the first period, as junior forward Sarah Wolf (Fairport, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks Elite) dropped a pass off to Walker in the right circle, and Walker wristed a shot past the goaltender blocker side. Rose handed the Cardinals a 5-0 advantage with 20.4 seconds left in the first. Rose picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone off an errant Cortland pass, and she sent a cross-ice pass to freshman forward Moe Tsukimoto (Sapporo, Japan/Northwood School) on the right wing. Tsukimoto then centered a pass to Rose in the high slot, and Rose scored through the five-hole.
 
Katonka scored just 43 seconds into the second period. Junior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) took control of the puck in the neutral zone and sent a pass forward to Katonka that broke Plattsburgh State on a 3-on-0 rush. Katonka dragged the puck to her back hand at the top of the crease and ended up scoring stick side. Whitney buried her second goal of the game just 21 seconds later. Benjamin passed D-to-D to McArdle, and McArdle took a shot from the left point that was initially stopped before Whitney poked the puck past the goal line.
 
With 4:52 elapsed in the second, Katonka netted her second of the contest. Moriarty passed to Katonka in the low slot, and Katonka took a backhanded jab at the puck before scoring low glove side. Brush also earned an assist on the play.
 
Cortland erased the shutout bid 26 seconds later. Senior defenseman Katy Kennedy played the puck down into the slot from the left point, and after sophomore forward Katie DeVoe had brief control, freshman forward Amanda Gaffney scored low glove side.
 
Whitney completed the hat trick at 9:31 of the second period, as she snuck the puck between the goaltender's left pad and the right post. Sophomore forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and senior forward Mackenzie Millen(Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) earned assists on the goal. Katonka finished her hat trick at 4:55 of the third, as she scored from the slot after a centering pass from Benjamin. Krauseneck also earned an assist on the play.
 
Finally, Hoskins closed out scoring with 11:32 gone in the third with her first collegiate goal. McArdle fed Moriarty with a pass to the top of the right face-off circle, and Moriarty passed across the slot to Hoskins, who was on the inside edge of the left circle. Hoskins took a shot that ricocheted off the inside part of the left post and across the goal line.

Plattsburgh State outshot Cortland, 52-15, while both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play.
 
Senior goaltender Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) was credited with the win, making eight saves in 34:11 of action. Freshman goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) played the final 25:49, making six stops while not allowing a goal. Senior goaltender Victoria Gibson was charged with the loss for Cortland, making 12 saves in the first period before handing the reins off to junior goaltender Bri Hersom, who turned aside 29 shots in the final two periods.
