Katonka's hat-trick propels Cardinals by Buffalo St.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) scored her second collegiate hat trick, as the No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team cruised past Buffalo State, 6-0, in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action Saturday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Katonka scored the eventual game-winner as well as the Cardinals' fifth and sixth goals. Freshman forward Moe Tsukimoto (Sapporo, Japan/Northwood School) also helped power the offense with a career-high two goals. Senior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) posted a pair of assists in the game and moved into 10th on the program's all-time point scoring list with 125 for her career.
 
The Cardinals outshot the Bengals, 64-13, and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Buffalo State was scoreless in seven chances with the extra attacker.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 12-2-0 overall (7-0-0 NEWHL) with the win, while Buffalo State drops to 5-7-2 overall (2-4-1 NEWHL) with the loss. The two teams will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
 
Katonka's first goal came 3:16 into the first period. The Cardinals won an offensive-zone face-off, while sophomore forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) got a piece of the puck before Katonka scored glove side from inside the left circle.
 
Sophomore forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) made it a 2-0 game 6:07 into the second, as she redirected freshman defenseman Hanna Rose's (Chaumont, N.Y./Northwood School) shot from the left point into the back of the net. Senior forward Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) also earned an assist on the play.
 
With 11:45 elapsed in the second, Tsukimoto netted her first of the contest. Sophomore defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) passed to Tsukimoto in the left corner, while Tsukimoto skated into the slot and scored glove side. With 29 seconds left in the second, Tsukimoto scored again, tallying on the power play. Freshman defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) passed D-to-D to Rose, and Rose ripped a slap shot that was saved before Tsukimoto banged in the rebound low glove side.
 
Katonka found twine again 10:26 into the third period, as Moriarty took a shot from inside the right circle that was saved before Katonka poked in the rebound. Senior defenseman Maci Hoskins (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northwood School) also earned an assist on the goal. Katonka completed the hat trick on the power play with 14:36 gone in the third, one-timing a pass from Moriarty past the goal line. Freshman forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) earned the secondary assist on the play.
 
Senior goaltender Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) posted her NCAA Division III-leading ninth shutout, turning aside 13 shots in the contest. Sophomore goaltender Bri Gawronski made 58 saves in the loss for Buffalo State.
