Cortland edges William Smith 3-2 in overtime

GENEVA, N.Y. – Junior Carly Weigold (Mahopac/Millbrook Mustangs) scored her second goal of the season one minute, 23 seconds into overtime as the Cortland women's ice hockey team skated to a 3-2 comeback win in non-conference action at William Smith Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 4-5-3 overall, including 4-0 in non-league games, while the Herons dropped to 10-3.

Sophomore Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) led Cortland with her sixth and seventh goals of the season. Senior Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit), junior Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals), sophomores Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) and Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) and freshman Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) each picked up an assist. Sophomore goalie Chelsea Allain (Saratoga/Canterbury School) stopped a career-best 38 shots.

Julia Mings and Stephanie Hampton netted one goal apiece for William Smith. Emily Martino collected two assists, and Kate Klimaszewski chipped in with one assist. Goalie Olivia Williams made 28 saves.

The Herons took a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play as Mings scored just 37 seconds into the game and Hampton tallied a power-play goal with only 29 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Neither team scored in the second period as Allain kept the Red Dragons in the game, turning aside the 18 shots she faced. Schnorr wasted little time in pulling Cortland to within 2-1, netting her sixth goal of the season just 30 seconds into the third period. She eventually evened the game at the 13:14 mark with her team-high seventh goal of the season off an assist from Pippin.

The Red Dragons had two late power-play opportunities in regulation but could not convert. The second chance carried over into the five-minute overtime period, and, although Cortland did not take advantage with the skater advantage, Weigold buried the game-winner 29 seconds after the William Smith penalty expired to grab the non-conference road victory.
