CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Ellie Cleary (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) scored her first career goal in the third period to break a 1-1 tie as the Potsdam women's ice hockey team held on to defeat Cortland, 2-1, Friday night in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. The Bears improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Red Dragons fell to 2-3 and 0-3.

Sophomore Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames AAA) scored for Cortland. Junior Carly Weigold (Mahopac/Millbrook Mustangs) and sophomore Katelinn Cummings (Johnson City/Northwood School) each recorded an assist. Senior goalie Victoria Gibson (Essex Junction, VT/Vermont Shamrocks) made 18 saves.

Sophomore Alexis Clark (Niagara Falls/Buffalo Bisons) also netted a goal for Potsdam. Junior Shelbi Thacker (Chesterfield, MI/Honeybaked) and senior Rylie Murray (Berkley, MI/Honeybaked) each collected an assist. Junior goalie Alexis Pfeiffer (Sylvania, OH/Little Caesar's) turned aside 20 shots.

Clark gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at 9:06 of the first period with a deflection in front off a pass from Thacker. DeVoe tied the game at 1-1 1:24 before the end of the period, flipping a loose puck in front into the left side of the goal.

After a scoreless second period, Cleary scored the game-winner at the 6:13 mark on a rebound. In the closing minutes, the Red Dragons pulled Gibson for an extra skater while on the power play, but a penalty on Cortland ended the threat as Potsdam held on for the 2-1 victory.
