Oswego blanks Cortland 4-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team shut out NEWHL foe Cortland, 4-0, at Alumni Arena on Friday afternoon. With the victory, Oswego improves to 9-11-2 this season, and 5-7-1 in conference play, while Cortland falls to 7-13-2 overall and 2-12-1 in NEWHL action. The win secures a spot for the Lakers in the NEWHL playoffs, but seeding will be determined later.

With a little more than a minute to go in the first period, Julieann White put the Lakers on the scoreboard. Andrea Noss passed the puck to White from behind the Red Dragon net, and White was able to put it away. Noss collected an assist on the goal, as did Philomena Teggart.

A little less than three minutes into the second period, Jean-marie Padden added to the Laker lead. When the puck deflected off a Cortland skater near the Red Dragon goal, Padden gained control and slapped it in to put Oswego up 2-0. Natalie Giglio and Sarah Grupp earned assists on Padden's goal.

Just under four minutes later, White was at it again. This time, Leah Czerwinski sent the puck to White, who skated down the ice and shot the puck past the Cortland goalie's outstretched arm into the right side of the net.

The Lakers' final goal of the game came late in the second period. Kate Randazzo rocketed a shot from the blueline, sending it through traffic into the Cortland goal. Teggart notched her second assist of the game on the goal, bringing her total to seven on the season.

Oswego was successful both offensively and defensively. Goalie Mariah Madrigal played all 60 minutes in the net for the Lakers, collecting 23 saves. With the shutout, her goals against average drops to 2.08 on the season. Madrigal and the Lakers successfully killed six penalties on the day.

Next, the Lakers and Red Dragons travel to Oswego to continue their two-game series at 7 p.m. on Friday.
