Oswego rolls by Utica 5-2

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team put on an offensive show on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Utica Pioneers 5-2. With the win, the Lakers improve to 6-7 this season and the Pioneers move to 7-5.

A little over 13 minutes into the first period, the Lakers captured the lead. Olivia Ellis swooped in to collect a loose puck, sending it to Julieann White who slapped it into the Utica net. The goal was the sophomore's first of the season. Ellis, who ranks second on the Lakers in assists this season, picked up an assist on the play, as did Kate Randazzo, the team leader.

Less than two minutes later, the Lakers were able to capitalize on a power-play situation. Laura Thacker sent the puck into traffic in front of the Pioneer goal, and Andrea Noss was able to stuff it through the commotion into the net to give Oswego a 2-0 advantage. Thacker notched an assist while Randazzo earned her second of the game.
After Utica scored in the second period, the Lakers took back their two-goal advantage. Natalie Giglio won the face-off and charged towards the Utica goal, sending the puck into the right side of the net for her first goal of the year.

When Utica scored in the third period, the Lakers answered again. First, Jean-marie Padden sent a hard shot into the left side of the net to put Oswego up, 4-2. Eryn Stewart and Andrea Noss each collected an assist on the goal. Then, with less than two minutes to go, Julieann White netted her second goal of the night, an empty-net power-play goal, to give the Lakers a 5-2 advantage.

Oswego returns to the ice for NEWHL action at 7 p.m. on Friday when it hosts the Potsdam Bears for game one of a two-game series.
