Couture Records 7th Goal as Roos Season Ends in NEWHL Semis

Plattsburgh, NY – Mathilde Couture posted her seventh goal of the season, but the SUNY Canton women's hockey team was unable to overcome a four-goal deficit as they fell 7-1 to No. 2 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State in the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Cardinals dominated the first period boasting a 23-1 shots on goal advantage as Mae Olshansky, Sara Krauseneck and Holly Schmelzer all found the back of the net for the hosts.
  • Plattsburgh extended its lead to four 12:05 into the middle period when Lily Stumm lit the lamp.
  • Couture got Canton on the board at 14:48 when she put a one-timer from the top of the right circle high past the glove of Ashley Davis. Iida Laitinen and Jayme McIlveen picked up helpers on Couture's team-leading fourth power play tally of the season.
  • Su-An Cho regained the four-goal advantage scoring her first goal of the game with 1:28 left in the second. The Cardinals led 5-1 after 40 minutes of action.
  • The hosts added third period goals from Sierra Benjamin and Bridget Orr for the 7-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Benjamin, Stumm, Cho, Riley Calhoun and Ciara Wall all had two-point nights for Plattsburgh.
  • The Cardinals held the upper hand in shots on goal (66-18) and face offs (51-23).
  • Canton was 1-for-4 on the power play, while killing off all four of its penalties including a five-minute major.
  • Alvarez made 59 saves tying her career-high which was also set against Plattsburgh State earlier this season (2/11). Those 59 saves are the most by a Roo goaltender since Brooke Susac made 65 saves against the Cardinals on November 16, 2019.
  • The SUNY Canton women's hockey team was ranked No. 24 nationally in this week's pairwise ratings for NCAA Division III. The Roos also received votes in the USCHO Top 15 national poll and were ranked in the D-III Hockey News Top 15 poll for the first time in program history this season. 
  • The 2022-23 Roos tied the program record for wins in a season (14) and set a new mark for most conference wins (7) in program history.
